Discover Agriculture in Benton County: Minnesota Ranks 5th in the U.S. for Ag Production

Agriculture, including livestock and crops, is big business in Minnesota. In 2021, 67,400 farm operations totaling 26 million acres generated $16.7 billion — earning it fifth place in the United States for agricultural production. Exports valued at  $6.37 billion make the ag industry the number one exporter in Minnesota of all industries and accounts for nearly one-third of the state’s total merchandise exports.

Benton County's agriculture includes both crop and livestock production. Corn, soybeans, potatoes, and kidney beans are the primary crops grown in the county, but there are also many fruit and vegetable growers and small farms. The average farm size in Minnesota is 375 acres.

Minnesota Department of Agriculture Grants

Minnesota assists its farmers with a variety of resources and aid. 

• Grain Storage Facility Safety Cost-Share. This program helps Minnesota farmers buy, ship, and install eligible safety equipment for on-farm grain bins or silos. It reimburses 75% of eligible expenses up to $400 per bin or silo and with a limit of $2,400 per farm per fiscal year.
• Rollover Protective Structures (ROPS) Rebates. This program makes tractor safety equipment affordable and simple to order. Sign up for the waitlist.
• Business Development, Loans, and Grants. A variety of resources is available.

National Agricultural Day 

While Benton County and Minnesota focus on agriculture every day, National Agriculture Day is March 22, 2022. The Agriculture Council of America and the National Ag Day program was started in 1973 with the intent to increase public awareness of agriculture's vital role in our society.
