Have you worked in an office and administrative support occupation and you’re ready to move up into a supervisory position? If so, you may be ready to become a First-Line Supervisor of Office and Administrative Support Workers. This occupational title encompasses many different types of supervisory roles, with examples including Accounts Payable Supervisor, Administrative Supervisor, Customer Service Manager, Office Coordinator, Office Supervisor, and Staff Services Manager. As this occupation does cover so many different areas, and is found in every industry sector, it is naturally a very large-employing occupation. In fact, with just over 20,000 jobs in Minnesota, this occupation is the state’s 24th largest-employing occupation.

First-Line Supervisors of Office and Administrative Support Workers directly supervise and coordinate the activities of clerical and administrative support workers. Specific tasks for such workers will depend on the company or organization, but some examples include providing employees with guidance in handling difficult or complex problems, discussing job performance with employees, preparing and issuing work schedules and project deadlines, interviewing and selecting new workers, leading employee training, and consulting with managers. The types of technology skills needed will also vary on the type of company or organization, but generally First-Line Supervisors of Office and Administrative Support Workers will work with PCs and various software, which may include accounting, calendar and scheduling, human resources, spreadsheet, and word processing software.
